Today was definately of the form 'just another day in the life of...'.
I spent most of the morning sitting around waiting to find out exactly what I was doing with my day. Finally, around 10 am (give or take 2 hours) I recieved the call I was waiting for, and decided to head down to Griffith University, Logan to do some more work with the Sony AIBO robot. Once there, I proceeded to screw up the computer by installing Sygate Personal Firewall in order to block MS Visual Studio from 'phoning home'. Unfortunately, apparently something on the computer related to Novell is incompatible with Sygate Personal Firewall (I know this because the computer wouldn't let me log on, even with the firewall not actively running). Thankfully, once I uninstalled it, things worked fine again.
After that, I installed Visual C++ and spent way too long attempting to remember how to code Visual C++ in order to edit a program used to communicate with the AIBO.
Somewhere during this period I was informed that I was expected to do a presentation at the conference I'm attending in a week. Thanks for the advance notice guys! Next time, why don't you just tell me the day of the conference ?! :P
About 2 pm I had a meeting to discuss progress reports for Professor Sun's PhD students. (At this point, I should possibly mention that Professor Sun and his research group are working on collaborative editing, for instance, collaborative MS Word, whereby two or more people can edit the same document, in real time, and have their changes reflected effectively instantaneously.) Unfortunately, as I have no prior knowledge of collaborative editing, this was quite boring to me, and consequentially, I fell asleep for a period of several seconds at least twice during the meeting. Thankfully, no one appeared to notice.
By the time the meeting ended, it was almost 'home time'. I spent about 5 further mins poking at the C++, but since it was being difficult I decided it could wait. Following that, I spent some time assisting my supervisor with various tasks.
Finally, just as I was leaving, my wife called and I managed to piss her off.
I think thats a long enough entry for today, so I'll stop here. :)
